Union Calls For Asbestos Survey Of Welsh Schools
Former teacher Renee Eden died aged 69 having worked in three schools in Flintshire before retiring in 1998. The Coroner decided that the cause of death was mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure. He has also taken the unusual step of writing to Flintshire County Council because of the possible risk to others.
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer. The tumour usually grows on the lining of the lung but can also develop in the peritoneum (the abdominal cavity). It is usually associated with asbestos exposure. It cannot be cured and the prognosis is always very poor.
The teachers union in
Hugh James solicitor Gavin Evans, head of Hugh James’s Asbestos Claims team said:
"We know that mesothelioma can be caused by very light exposure to asbestos. It is conceivable that one short exposure to asbestos could cause this terrible condition. So although a teacher is not an obviously risky occupation is terms of asbestos exposure this case just shows that asbestos can affect anyone.
It is not just power station workers and steel workers who are at risk – anyone who has had any exposure to asbestos – however slight – may be at risk of developing mesothelioma."
