Hugh James obtain six-figure compensation for mesothelioma victim’s family

The family of a Caerphilly man who sadly died of the asbestos related cancer mesothelioma in 2005 has been paid £140 000 compensation.

It was alleged that he had been exposed to asbestos from lagged pipes while working in the warehouse of a Caerphilly supermarket during the late 1970s and early 1980s. He died less than 12 months after the fatal cancer was diagnosed in 2004.

Somerfield, the supermarket chain concerned, maintained a denial of liability until they consented to judgment being entered against them just days before the case was to be heard at trial.

Cenric Clement-Evans, Partner at Hugh James who advised the family on the settlement of the claim, said: "Mesothelioma is an awful disease which can affect people decades after exposure to asbestos.  It causes terrible suffering and compensation will not bring the victim back to the family.  My client’s main concern was always that there should be justice for her partner and in particular that she was protected financially after his death."
