South Wales E.Coli Public Enquiry

Latest News: Issued on Behalf of the Public Inquiry into the South Wales E.Coli Outbreak - 27th February 2007

The Public Inquiry Preliminary Hearing took place on 27 June 2006 at the National Assembly Offices in Crickhowell House, Cardiff Bay.

The Preliminary Hearing was the first formal stage in the Inquiry process. The Inquiry Chairman, Professor Hugh Pennington, made a statement with regards to the nature of the Inquiry and how he wished to proceed. All of the parties who have been named as core participants to the Inquiry had an opportunity to introduce themselves and make a brief statement.

The oral hearings were then adjourned for further investigation to be carried out.  The Inquiry has a relatively broad term of reference to enable them to carry out detailed and thorough investigations. The Inquiry Team intend to publish a provisional timetable for the whole Inquiry in due course.

Professor Pennington indicated he wishes the Inquiry work to proceed as quickly as possible but is mindful of the importance of the police investigation if criminal proceedings are to be brought against anyone in relation to the E-coli outbreak and he has made it clear that he will not do anything that may prejudice those inquiries.

The Inquiry therefore may take some time to reach a conclusion but must be allowed to run its course.

The most important issue with regards to the Inquiry is that it is a full and thorough investigation into the E-coli outbreak and ensures that all measures are put in place to limit the risk of such an outbreak occurring again in the future.
