Inquests

It is very traumatic to deal with the ordeal involved in an inquest.

The Clinical Negligence Team at Hugh James have a huge amount of experience in dealing with all aspects of inquests, which means that the family will be totally supported throughout the procedure.

We will correspond with the Coroner and ensure that all appropriate evidence is put before the Inquest Tribunal and represent the family at the inquest to provide a through investigation into their loved ones death.

When these matters involve potential clinical negligence we can ensure that appropriate medical evidence is obtained before the inquest, if necessary, and ensure that all doctors are appropriately cross-examined at the inquest so that as much information can be obtained on behalf of the family as is possible.

The inquest is a very difficult procedure for families to undergo as the purpose of an inquest is not to apportion blame on any party but is to identify how someone has passed away, along with other limited details.

Despite the limited nature of inquests the team of lawyers at Hugh James have obtained neglect verdicts in the past whereby blame has been apportioned on parties due to the poor standard of care provided and this can be investigated in all cases.

Stephen Webber, Partner in the Clinical Negligence Team, is a member of Inquest Lawyers’ Group and specialises in representation at inquests.

There are a number of ways of funding an inquest and in certain circumstances public funding is available or inquests can be funded on a "no win, no fee" basis as part of a clinical negligence action or by legal expenses insurance.
