Brain Injury

‘No head injury is too severe to despair nor too trivial to ignore’ : Hippocrates, c.48BC.

It is estimated that over one million people in the UK suffer a traumatic brain injury each year. In a matter of seconds, such a catastrophic injury may irrevocably alter the whole pattern of a person’s life causing devastation to the individual and their families.

A traumatic brain injury is damage caused to the brain by an external force to the head. It may produce a unique range of problems which may be classed as mild, moderate or severe. Some of the problems will be apparent to others. However, unlike physical injuries, the vast majority of the problems suffered remain hidden and are not always obvious to other people.

The effects generally involve difficulties with behaviour and cognitive skills such as memory, concentration, planning and problem solving.
