The Commission for Social Care Inspection has found in a report that people’s savings are still the main factor taken into account regarding how much elderly people should pay for their care. The findings will form part of the Government’s Green Paper on the future of social care, and calls for an end to the "postcode lottery" and the means-tested system currently in place. Better regulation of care homes to give a better service
A new complaints system and tougher inspections are amongst the plans in the pipeline for a better regulation system of care homes. Life made harder for dementia patients by stigma
The Alzheimer’s society have carried out a survey which shows the stigma surrounding dementia makes it difficult for patients to deal with the diagnosis of what is already a terrible disease. Certain patients documented neighbours crossing the street to avoid them, as well as distressing experiences with doctors misdiagnosing them, or even passing off their symptoms as "old age". Housing market slumps results in huge interest charges for care home residents
Elderly people and their families are finding it increasingly difficult to sell their property due to the slump in the housing market, and are therefore experiencing problems in raising the cash to pay for their care home fees.
